Scholarships and Financial Aid for Chemistry Students

OSU offers scholarships for entering freshmen and transfer students to recognize students' academic achievement, while promoting the diversity necessary to achieve the University's educational goals. These include the Presidential Scholarship, Provost Scholarship, and the Diversity Achievement Scholarship.

A scholarship application form is a component of the Application for Undergraduate Admission.  The Chemistry Department or College of Science does not accept applications or directly award scholarships to new students.

Oregon High School seniors may also independently apply for Oregon AeA Technology Scholarships.   These premier scholarship-internship-mentorship packages are awarded to Oregon high school graduates entering engineering or computer science related programs.  This definition includes chemistry majors.  Each award includes: 1) $2,500 per year scholarship, 2) annual renewal through 4 years, 3) corporate mentorship, and 4) summer internships available.  Our chemistry options in materials science and chemical engineering are oriented toward technology.

Continuing CHEMISTRY students

The College of Science (COS) awards their own scholarships. For additional information, visit the College of Science Scholarships Webpage which includes a list of the available scholarships. These scholarships are directed at students who are currently enrolled at OSU and are awarded for the student's second or later year of attendance at OSU.  Continuing students are defined as students who have completed a minimum of 30 hours of course work at OSU by the end of Winter term when the application is made for the scholarship for the following year.

The Department of Chemistry also has a number of scholarships to award to continuing students.  These COS scholarships are reserved specifically for outstanding chemistry majors although application is made through the College of Science. These chemistry scholarships are for one year and require a GPA of 3.5 unless otherwise noted.  Students receive the scholarship during the academic year after the scholarship is awarded. Some scholarships are renewable.

Carroll W. DeKock Scholarship: Awarded to first and second year students.  Award amount, $1500.    

Peter B. Culter Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to second or third year students who reside in the United States. Minimum GPA of a 3.0. Award amount, $1500. Renewable. Typically 2 or 3 scholarships per year.

Colleen Spurgeon Scholarship: Awarded to first, second, or third year students. Award amount varies from $500 to $750.

The Linda May Oleson Scholarship for Excellence in Chemistry:  Awarded to third year students.  Award amount,  $1000.   

Milton Harris Scholarship: Awarded to first, second, or third year students. Award amount varies (typically $250 to $500).

The Hach Scientific Foundation Scholarship I:  Awarded to first, second, or third year chemistry majors with the chemistry education option. Minimum GPA of a 3.0. Award amount, $6000. Renewable.

The Hach Scientific Foundation Scholarship II:  Awarded to first, second, or third year chemistry major. Minimum GPA of a 3.0.  Award amount, $6000. Renewable.

All awards and renewals are contingent on available funds.

DETAILS ABOUT DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

 The Carroll DeKock Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry.  The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science with either sophomore or junior standing in chemistry while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5.  Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.  Award amount, $1500.    

 The Peter C. Culter Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry.  Recipients must be residents of the United States, enrolled as full-time students in the College of Science with either junior or senior standing in chemistry while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0.  The scholarship is renewed for one year provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time in the College of Science, maintains a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0 and notifies the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted.  Special consideration is given to students who have financial need.  Award amount, $1500.     

 The Colleen Spurgeon Scholarship is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate student majoring in chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry.  The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5. Award amount varies, $500 to $750.     

 The Linda May Oleson Scholarship for Excellence in Chemistry is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to an undergraduate student majoring in chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry and potential for success in post-graduate studies and/or a career in chemistry.  The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science with senior standing while receiving the scholarship and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5.  Previous recipients will be considered if they meet eligibility criteria.  Award amount, $1000.    

 The Milton Harris Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in chemistry in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry.  The recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student in the College of Science and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5.  Award amount varies (typically $250 to $500)     

 The Hach Scientific Foundation Scholarship I is awarded annually by the Department of Chemistry to one or more undergraduate students majoring in chemistry with the chemistry education option in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement.  Recipients must be citizens of the United States, enrolled as full-time students in the College of Science and have a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0.  The scholarship is renewed annually provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time in the College of Science, maintains a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.0 and notifies the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted.  Undergraduate students are limited to three one-year awards.  A special one-year renewal is available to students enrolled full-time in the OSU MAT program provided they maintain a GPA of not less than 3.0 and notify the Honors and Awards Committee of their desire that the renewal be granted.  Financial need may be considered, but is not a requirement.  Award amount, $6000.
