Chemistry Minor Audits

Your graduation audit, which you can check on the WEB, indicates if the requirements for the chemistry minor have been met (Y) or not met (N).

1. If the graduation audit indicates that requirements are met (Y), the minor will be certified by your college when the graduation audit for your major is completed.

2.  If the audit indicates that requirements are not met (N), do not panic.  Your graduation audit will be examined manually by a chemistry adviser in the chemistry department when the audits are received in the middle of the term you will graduate.  In many cases when the automated graduation audit fails, the requirements for the chemistry minor have been fulfilled and this will be certified after a manual audit.

The computer program that generates the graduation audit compares your CH courses to the requirements for the chemistry minor.  This program does not correctly evaluate all possible situations. The computer-generated audit provides guidance to the student and the academic adviser. An academic adviser in chemistry make the final decision about approving the audit for departmental requirements if the automated audit indicates N.

The automated graduation audit works best for students who started as Freshmen at OSU and who have taken all their chemistry (CH) courses at OSU.  For such students, the CH courses taken should exactly match the courses and combinations of courses that are appropriate for the chemistry minor.

The automatic graduation audit will often not work if you have transferred CH courses from another institution and the CH course numbers on your transcript from the transfer do not match the CH course numbers at OSU.  In some cases, specific course numbers from Oregon community colleges have been included as acceptable substitutions in the audit program.

Reasons for "errors" in the audit  (Why the graduation audit incorrectly indicates N for the chemistry minor requirements):

1. You are taking a required CH course the term of your graduation (the evaluation program does not consider current courses). This reason accounts for over 50% of the "not met" specification on chemistry minor audits.

e.g., You applied to graduate Spring term but are also taking CH 337 Spring term and CH 337 is the only course needed to fulfill the requirements for the chemistry minor. The audit does not take into account the courses in progress.  In this case, you know that you are okay as long as you pass CH 337 and maintain a GPA of at least 2.0 in all chemistry courses. A chemistry academic adviser will indicate on your audit that you must pass any courses in progress that are required for chemistry minor. Once you pass CH 337, the requirement will be satisfied after the term is complete.

2.  You have transferred CH courses from another institution that can be used to fulfill certain requirements, but the CH course numbers or credits of the transfer courses do not match the numbers of the required courses at OSU. This reason accounts for about 20% of the "not met" specification on chemistry minor audits.

e.g., You took the entire general chemistry series (e.g., CH 121-123) at an Oregon community college (CC).  All or part of this series does not transfer as CH 121-123 and some of the credits are marked something like "LD college chemistry".  Hence, the automatic audit may not indicate you have not fulfilled general chemistry requirement for the chemistry minor.  Based on adequate grades in the CC general chemistry sequence of the appropriate level, a chemistry academic adviser can accept the transfer courses as satisfying the specific requirements and will note on your audit that the requirements for the chemistry minor has been fulfilled. See minor general chemistry requirements

In some cases a course such as organic chemistry lab may be transferred as CH 337 but only as 2 credits when the minimum must be 3 credits.  The automated program will not accept this course as fulfilling the requirement.  This type of situation will be addressed on a case by case basis.

Valid Reasons for the graduation audit to indicate correctly that the requirements for the chemistry minor have not been met:.

1. You have taken less than 27 credits of CH courses or less than 12 credits of upper division CH courses. It may be that you are taking a CH course your last term which will satisfy the minimum credit limits. Note that you cannot count credits for two levels of the same type of course (e.g., CH 121 and CH 221 - only 5 credits are allowed or for CH 334 and CH 331).  The maximum allowed credits of general chemistry is 15 cr and of organic chemistry  is 12 cr.

2. You actually have not taken or are enrolled in a course a required to meet the chemistry minor requirements (e.g., you are missing a upper division laboratory CH course of 3 or more credits). This reason is the most common for a student not fulfilling the requirements of the chemistry minor.  Usually a student has taken general chemistry at CH 331, 332, & 337 but has not taken or passed CH 324 or CH 390.

3. Your overall GPA in chemistry (CH) courses is below 2.0.  Note that both the OSU GPA in CH courses and the transfer course GPA for chemistry courses must be 2.0 or greater.

If you want an unofficial verification that the courses you completed meet the requirements for a chemistry minor, e-mail your student id number and term of graduation (if your course information is not in the student data base, send a list of chemistry courses and grades) to Professor James D. Ingle (James.Ingle@oregonstate.edu).
